Community Information

The Isle of Palms really didn’t originate until Dr. Joseph Lawrence purchased the then-called Long Island in 1898 and renamed it the Isle of Palms. He had a railway company that brought guests to his new resort along a trolly line from Mt Pleasant to the Isle of Palms. In 1912, James Sottile built a beach pavilion and amusement park to make the Isle of Palms a destination spot popular for Charlestonians. Slowly, small cottages were built on the southern end of the island and in 1929, the Cooper River Bridge was built to help get more visitors to the island. In the mid 1940’s, J.C. Long bought the remaining undeveloped portion of the island and then started building homes for the returning vets from WWII. J.C. Long also built motels, motorcourts and duplexes to encourage vacationing guests. J.C. Long was a forerunner of a mixed use development with both year-round residents and summer vacationers. It remained a small bedroom community with seasonal rentals until 1975 when Sea Pines bought the northern end of the Isle of Palms and created the Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club, thereby making the island known as a world class vacation destination point.

Isle of Palms Today

Today, the island is made up of about 1/3 residents, 1/3 second home owners, and 1/3 vacation rentals. Visitors and full-time residents alike can enjoy a sense of community that is rare in a beach resort town. The Isle of Palms’ city government and  its residents have worked tirelessly to balance the sense of Old Charleston’s historic preservation with the needs of beach development and growth. They’ve succeeded in conserving the quaint neighborhood-feel of the southern end of the island where in the winter months, there are almost as many golf carts as there are cars on the roads, while at the same time, providing a recreation center for residents and tourists, and a full service marina with restaurants, paddle board and jet ski rentals. On the northern end of the island, the Wild Dunes, a gated community offers two world-class champion golf courses designed by Tom Fazio, fabulous restaurants, and all of the amenities one would expect from a luxury resort.

Location, Location, Location

Virtually any Isle of Palms beach houses for sale are in the perfect location. All of the attractions noted above are offered just minutes away from historic downtown Charleston, one of America’s oldest cities, where one can walk down cobblestone roads on fabulous guided tors of the pre and post-colonial South. A foodie heaven, connoisseurs and seafood lovers alike can din at one of Charleston’s numerous award-winning restaurants. Those who don’t want to drive downtown can appreciate the local charm of nearby Old Mount Pleasant where one can still pull a chair up to an old fashioned soda fountain and order a malt or relax and watch the spectacular sunsets at one of the waterside restaurants in Shem Creek, home to one of the areas last fishing boat fleets.
